Inside DNA Lounge

The vibe

DNA Lounge is a sprawling, no-pretense SoMa institution occupying a converted warehouse at 375 11th St, a block deep into San Francisco's old nightlife corridor. The room has seven bars, two stages, and four dance floors spread across the space, which means the crowd fractures by subculture depending on the night — goths on Mondays, rave kids on weekends, burlesque regulars in between. It's all-ages for many events, which gives it a deliberately inclusive, anti-velvet-rope feel that reflects owner Jamie Zawinski's (former Netscape engineer) ethos about keeping the club independent and community-oriented since he bought it in 2001.

Known for

What to expect

The crowd and music vary wildly by night — goth/industrial on Mondays draws a committed scene crowd, while weekend dance parties skew younger and genre-diverse. Prices are generally reasonable by SF standards; the all-ages policy on many events keeps it accessible. DNA Pizza (the in-house restaurant/cafe) is open late, so you can eat inside the club. Expect a no-frills industrial space, not bottle-service aesthetics.
