The Underground was a basement-level club in River North at 56 W. Illinois St., designed to look like a military bomb shelter — artillery cases as cocktail tables, illuminated world maps on the walls, soft dramatic lighting. It ran from 2007 to May 2024, when it closed after 17 years to become a private events space. At its peak it was a celebrity magnet and one of Chicago's most high-profile nightclubs.
