Oakland's club map got redrawn hard over the last two years. The New Parish went dark in December 2025, Port Bar lost its lease in early 2024, and Bench and Bar's successor Club BNB is long gone. But this town does not leave a good room empty: Crybaby took over the old Uptown Nightclub space across from the Fox, Zanzi moved into the former Era Art Bar on Grand, and the Level 13 space came back to life as Next Level in August 2025. The scene is smaller than its reputation, and it is also more alive than the obituaries suggest.
What you actually get here is the most mixed set of dance floors in the Bay. Afrobeats and amapiano on Grand Ave, dancehall and soca on Webster, reggaeton and banda in the downtown queer corridor around 13th and 15th, hyphy and house on Telegraph, jazz until late in Jack London Square. Rooms are smaller than SF's big boxes, covers are lower, and the crowd dances instead of standing around filming.
Everything runs on a 2am last call, so nights start earlier than out-of-towners expect. The spine is Uptown along Telegraph and Broadway near the Fox Theater, with a second cluster downtown and a waterfront option in Jack London. Programming is promoter-driven and changes weekly, so check the Instagram before you commit. Last call is 2am across California, and Oakland takes it seriously. Most floors peak between 11pm and 1:30am, so start earlier than you would in cities with after-hours culture. A few spots like Thee Stork Club open at 4pm daily, which makes long-haul nights easy.
The New Parish closed in December 2025, Port Bar shut in early 2024 after a lease dispute, and Club BNB and Era Art Bar are gone too. The flip side: Crybaby, Zanzi, Fluid510 and Next Level all opened in the last few years, mostly in those same recycled spaces. The scene shrank on paper and got sharper in practice.
Zanzi on Grand Ave is the afrobeats and amapiano anchor, New Karibbean City on Webster runs dancehall and soca with live island concerts, and AU Lounge and 811 Oakland both work afro-dancehall and reggae into their weekly rotations. You can build an entire weekend on this circuit alone.
Some of the best in the Bay right now. Que Rico runs Latin queer nights downtown, its new sibling Next Level opened in August 2025, and Fluid510 carries the Port Bar community with drag brunches and dance parties on Broadway. The corridor between 13th and 15th streets is the heart of it.
Almost never. Oakland runs on cover-at-the-door or free-before-a-certain-hour economics, not table minimums. Concert nights at Crybaby, Yoshi's and New Karibbean City sell real tickets, so buy ahead for named acts and just show up for everything else.
