London runs on a student clock. Western and Fanshawe pump tens of thousands of people into a downtown you can cross on foot, and most of them funnel onto Richmond Row, the stretch of Richmond Street where the Ceeps has been pouring since 1890 and the lines outside Jack's start before you have finished your first drink. This is not Toronto and it does not want to be. Covers are lower, everything is closer together, and the whole night happens between a handful of corners.
The shape of the week matters more here than in most cities. The pure clubs, Cowboys Ranch and Lost Love Social, only open Friday and Saturday, so weekends are when the city actually shows up. Midweek belongs to the Richmond Row bars, where student deals do the heavy lifting on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Ontario last call is 2am everywhere, so nights start earlier than you think and nobody is fashionably late past midnight.
One block off the Row things get more interesting. Dundas and Talbot hold the concert rooms and the weirder bars: London Music Hall books national tours, Holy Diver plays metal over smash burgers, and The Well runs drag into the small hours. A few old names are gone, Call the Office closed in 2020 and the Barking Frog corner traded chaos for cocktails, but the city replaced them without slowing down. Bring a physical ID.
