Hoboken is a bar town, not a club town, and it owns that. You get a mile square packed with more liquor licenses per block than almost anywhere in Jersey, most of them stacked along Washington Street and the blocks running down to the PATH. The move here is the crawl: start with cheap pitchers and games, end up somewhere with a DJ and a packed floor by midnight without ever paying for a car.
There is exactly one true nightclub in town, Birch on River Street, and everything else is a bar that flips. Around 10pm the tables get cleared, the DJ takes over, and places that served wings two hours earlier start running bottle service. The Shannon has been doing this longer than most of its crowd has been alive. Covers exist on weekends but rarely pass twenty bucks, and last call runs 2am to 3am depending on the room.
The crowd skews early and mid twenties, heavy on recent grads and finance commuters blowing off steam, and it goes hard on SantaCon, St. Patrick's season and any Saturday with decent weather. If you want an actual underground dance floor, Downtown Jersey City is one PATH stop away, and Porta and The Ashford on Newark Ave are both clearly worth the trip.
